Kayaking in Golfo Dulce
Our pebble beach is just a minute’s walk from the main living areas and offers an ever-changing coastline to explore at both high and low tide. Kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are available for complimentary use throughout your stay, allowing you to discover our beautiful stretch of coastline at your own pace. Paddle along Playa San Josecito beneath a backdrop of pristine rainforest and palm-fringed beaches, looking out for jumping fish, sea turtles, pelicans, seabirds and perhaps even dolphins surfacing nearby.

Our self-guided Kayak Ocean Trail follows the wild coastline south from the Retreat. After around 10 minutes, you will reach Punta Encanto, where you can leave your kayak on a secluded sandy beach and explore the surroundings. An interesting rock formation at the point provides a great spot to slip into the water with a mask and snorkel and discover what lies beneath the surface.

Continue paddling for around 20 minutes to a palm-fringed beach, with a small spring nearby where you can cool off during the green season. There are several secluded beaches along this stretch of coastline, making it easy to pull your kayak ashore and find your own quiet corner of paradise. Keep an eye on the water as you paddle, as dolphins and sea turtles are regularly spotted in this part of Golfo Dulce.
Wild beach along the Ocean Trail
Those wanting a longer adventure can continue towards Punta Gallardo, approximately 50 minutes from the Retreat, passing the roosting site of our local colony of brown pelicans along the way. Blue-footed boobies are also occasional visitors to the rocky point, while the surrounding waters offer further opportunities for wildlife encounters.

The Kayak Ocean Trail is best enjoyed in the early morning when the sea is generally at its calmest, and is recommended for confident paddlers. For a more leisurely outing, the waters immediately around Playa San Josecito are perfect for enjoying our kayaks and stand-up paddleboards closer to home.

You will find a copy of our Kayak Ocean Trail in your suite. Use of kayaks and stand-up paddleboards is complimentary, and we provide sports life jackets. Masks and snorkels are also available to rent.
